Planning a wedding can be a lot of work. Many brides feel overwhelmed, especially during the early stages of wedding planning. Here are some tips on how to start planning your wedding in an organized fashion which will be far less stressful.
Take care of the big details first
It may be tempting to start out with fun things like invitations or decorations, but that is a temptation you really need to avoid. There will be time to choose all those things later, but for now you need to start big. Yes, start big. I know people usually tell you to start small, but weddings just do not work that way! Take care of the big details and the smaller stuff will be much easier later on.
The Location
Do you know where you are getting married yet? If you answered no this is where to begin. Where you are getting married can drastically change the look and feel of the day. There is a huge difference between a small backyard wedding and a huge church wedding. Choose wisely. Think about what your day is going to be like, what you want, how many guests you have and of course your budget comes into play as well.
The decision of where the ceremony will be held is one that needs to be made early because wedding venues may be reserved for long periods of time. If you absolutely fall in love with a certain venue you will need to see if they are available on your wedding date. If they are not you may either have to change the venue or the wedding date. If you change the wedding date this can affect other decisions you may have already made and that is why it is imperative to choose the venue early on in the wedding planning process.
The same rules apply to choosing where the reception will be held. You need to make this decision early, usually immediately after choosing the ceremony location. Also keep in mind that you will need to know what time the reception begins so you will need to know how long the ceremony lasts and give yourself adequate time in between the two for wedding photos and travel.
Choosing a Wedding Theme
Next you want to ask yourself what kind of wedding you want to have. If you choose you may want a themed wedding. Themed weddings are becoming more and more popular. Some common themes are fairytale weddings, Celtic weddings, beach weddings, Romance and holiday weddings. Incorporating a theme is really not that difficult, you just need to choose wedding stationery, favors and decorations carefully to accentuate your theme. If a theme is not for you that is fine but you still need to decide how your wedding will feel by choosing the type of wedding such as casual, traditional or modern.
Choosing Wedding Apparel
Finally it is time to choose what you and the wedding party will wear. This includes choosing the wedding dress, the Tuxedos, and the Bridesmaid dresses. Choose wisely as again this will affect how your wedding looks, as well as the wedding colors.
Making Decisions of the Rest of the Day
Once you made all your choices above you can move onto the rest of the details. The good news is that once you know where, when, wedding type and clothing the rest of the details will be easier. You know the wedding colors or theme so now you can choose cake designs, flower colors, centerpieces and stationery with ease. You will be making decisions to match all pieces on the wedding to one another and because you took the time to be organized your wedding will come together much easier.

Marissa Mayer, Google's star-dappled moon queen, married fiancé Zach Bogue this weekend in San Francisco. We hear the fashion-conscious VP's three-day wedding was positively star-studded. And that was just the help. Some names:
- The Killers. The rock/synth-pop bad played for Mayer and her guests Friday night at San Francisco club Bimbo's. Mayers' friends tried to Twitter discreetly about the private performance; others around town caught wind of the show but the not the bride.
- Jean-Georges Vongerichten. Vongerichten is considered one of the world's best chefs and is proprietor of, among other establishments, an eponymous restaurant in New York with three Michelin stars. He doesn't have a restaurant in San Francisco, however, which makes it all the more remarkable that Mayer brought his culinary services into the SF Four Seasons, where she lives and the home base for her nuptial celebration. Rumors of his presence at the hotel have already begun to circulate.
- Singing toaster: Mayer was serenaded by Google co-worker Craig Silverstein in a singing toast. Anyone have further details?
- Mystery pastry chef: Also something of a star, apparently, though we don't know who it is yet.
Mayer is an obsessive and data-driven planner in her role as VP for search products at Google. She also loves Oscar de la Renta and having her own fashion spreads in Glamour and Vogue. So it's no surprise her wedding was such an elaborate affair, from the ornate, velvety invitation boxes right through to the celebrity catering. Husband Bogue, a hunky investment manager one year her junior, is no doubt accustomed to handling the pressure of such complex, high pressure events.
Many of Mayer's friends seemed similarly in sync with Mayer, tweeting infrequently during the three-day affair in a nod to Mayers' privacy (not to mention her intense security policies).
Speaking of which: We've yet to find any pictures from the wedding. Mayer banned outside photography, one source tells us. If you have one, or can answer any of the questions above, or know the names of the more prominent guests, I'd love to hear from you.
Oh, and Marissa, Zach: Congratulations!
